Africa Hunter Quest

Discover the Path

“No man is competent unless he is able to stalk alone and armed through the wilderness.”

– Colonel Townsend Whelen

This website presents a process for defining, evaluating, and preparing for any thin-skinned, non-dangerous big-game hunting scenario. It also presents “how-to” content to aid in that preparation.

The process simply identifies issues that typically need resolution to increase to odds of a successful hunt outcome. The evaluation portion of this process includes a simplistic numerical analysis. The result of this analysis produces responsive hunt strategies based on anticipated field circumstances, the characteristics of the animal, individual hunter terminal performance requirements, and individual hunter tolerance for risk.

The process is embedded in the eBook’s storyline in the form of a worked example problem. Included are judgements and decisions made by a fictitious hunter implementing it for the first time, based on speculative terminal performance concepts and analysis derived from a personal analytical model and from testing expanding hunting bullets in 20% synthetic gel.

Field and skinning-shed data obtained from a 2023 management hunt validate the terminal performance concepts and analysis presented in the eBook. The hunt data indicate that the analytical model, called “Guppy”, combined with bullet testing in 20% synthetic gel, produces test metric values that can empirically predict wounding, penetration, and meat damage when compared to the gel-test metric values of a bullet with known field terminal performance.

The numerical analysis can indicate that off-the-shelf-ammunition with the desired bullet weight and performance characteristics is unavailable. As described in the eBook’s storyline, crafting hunt-specific hand-loaded ammunition can be a viable option. For those hunters that hand load, “how-to” hand-loading tips to improve ammunition consistency and accuracy are presented based on my experience as a gold-level, IBS 1000-yard benchrest shooter.

I have hunted in South Africa six times. Included in this website are articles about generic equipment I have found useful, shooting techniques and practice routines that have proven beneficial, and physical training suggestions to enhance the enjoyment of traditional safari hunts where the animals are stalked.

Adopting any aspect of the process or the “how-to” content identified in this website fundamentally requires a willingness to learn and to try new things. Unfortunately, trying new things incurs the risk of failure. “Failure” simply provides an opportunity to learn and adjust accordingly. As Nick Saban has shown, focused practice within a coherent and integrated process produces the desired outcome. I can assure any reader that the process described in this website has been refined with numerous personal failures and “Oh $#!+” moments.

This website is fundamentally about helping others, not accumulating “like” statistics. If its contents prove to be beneficial in a meaningful way, consider saying thank you by passing it along to friends. A personal referral based on merit is the traditional and preferred form of “like”. I wish everyone success and good hunting.
